Fagus sylvatica - common beech

Fagus sylvatica, commonly known as the Common Beech, is one of Britain's most magnificent native trees. Admired for its smooth silver-grey bark, elegant broad canopy and vibrant seasonal foliage, it is a timeless choice for gardens, parks, woodland planting and large landscapes. Long-lived and exceptionally hardy, the Common Beech provides beauty and structure throughout every season. Fresh bright green leaves emerge in spring, creating a dense canopy that casts cool shade during the summer months. As autumn arrives, the foliage transforms into glowing shades of golden yellow, copper and rich bronze, often remaining on younger trees well into winter. Small flowers appear in spring, followed by distinctive triangular beech nuts enclosed in spiny husks, providing an important food source for birds and woodland wildlife. The Common Beech thrives in fertile, well-drained soils and is highly adaptable to a range of growing conditions. It responds exceptionally well to pruning, making it equally suitable as a magnificent specimen tree or a formal hedge. As one of the UK's most valuable native trees, it supports a wide variety of birds, insects and mammals.
