Alnus cordata - Italian Alder

Alnus cordata, commonly known as the Italian Alder, is a fast-growing deciduous tree valued for its attractive glossy green foliage, neat pyramidal shape and exceptional adaptability. Ideal for gardens, parks, avenues and larger landscapes, it is a hardy and reliable tree that provides year-round interest while thriving in a wide range of growing conditions.Fresh, heart-shaped leaves emerge in spring and remain rich green well into late autumn, often staying on the tree longer than many other deciduous species. In late winter and early spring, attractive yellow-brown catkins appear alongside small cone-like fruits that persist throughout the year, adding seasonal character and providing food for wildlife. The Italian Alder is renowned for its ability to improve soil by fixing nitrogen through its roots, making it particularly useful for planting on poor or challenging sites. It is tolerant of wind, pollution, drought once established and even wetter soils, making it a popular choice for urban landscapes and large-scale planting schemes.
