Pinus sylvestris, commonly known as the Scots Pine, is Britain's only native pine tree and one of the country's most iconic evergreens. Valued for its distinctive orange-brown bark, blue-green needles and attractive open canopy, it provides year-round colour, structure and wildlife value, making it an excellent choice for gardens, estates, woodland planting and larger landscapes. Its long, twisted blue-green needles remain on the tree throughout the year, creating a soft, natural appearance. As the tree matures, the upper trunk develops its characteristic flaky orange-red bark, providing striking winter interest. Small cones appear in spring and mature over two years, producing seeds that provide food for birds and small mammals. The Scots Pine is exceptionally hardy and thrives in a wide range of well-drained soils, including poor, sandy and acidic ground. Highly tolerant of wind, frost and exposed conditions, it is an excellent choice for shelterbelts, woodland creation and specimen planting. Once established, it requires very little maintenance.
