The classic purple-leaved Japanese maple. 'Atropurpureum' bears dark red-purple, deeply lobed leaves through spring and summer, firing up to vivid scarlet in autumn. A tough, dependable variety and often the best value way into red-leaved acers.
Upright and bushy, slowly reaching 3–4m. Best in a sheltered spot in sun or part shade; excellent in borders or a large pot.
