Carpinus betulus - hornbeam

Carpinus betulus, commonly known as the Hornbeam, is a handsome native deciduous tree prized for its elegant form, attractive foliage and exceptional versatility. Similar in appearance to the beech but more tolerant of heavier soils, it is an excellent choice for gardens, parks, avenues, woodland planting and formal hedging. Fresh bright green, finely serrated leaves emerge in spring alongside slender yellow-green catkins that attract pollinating insects. Throughout summer, the dense canopy provides excellent shade before transforming into rich shades of golden yellow, amber and copper during autumn. Many of the dried bronze leaves remain on younger trees and hedges throughout winter, providing year-round interest and additional screening. The Hornbeam develops a strong, rounded crown with beautifully fluted grey bark that becomes increasingly attractive as the tree matures. It is exceptionally hardy, responds well to pruning and thrives in a wide range of soils, including heavy clay, making it one of the most reliable native trees for both formal and natural landscapes.
