Quercus rubra, commonly known as the Red Oak or Northern Red Oak, is a magnificent deciduous tree admired for its broad canopy, rapid growth and spectacular autumn colour. Native to North America, it has become one of the most popular ornamental and landscape trees in the UK, offering outstanding seasonal interest and long-lasting beauty. Fresh glossy green leaves emerge in spring, creating a dense canopy throughout summer that provides excellent shade. As autumn arrives, the foliage transforms into brilliant shades of scarlet, crimson, orange and rich red, producing one of the finest autumn displays of any oak. Distinctive acorns develop during autumn, providing an important food source for birds, squirrels and other wildlife, while the deeply ridged bark adds attractive winter character. The Red Oak is a hardy, vigorous tree that thrives in fertile, well-drained soils and performs best in full sun. It is tolerant of urban conditions and pollution, making it an excellent choice for parks, avenues, large gardens and public landscapes.
