One of the best-known and most reliable of all Japanese maples, 'Bloodgood' carries deep purple-red foliage that holds its colour well through summer before turning brilliant crimson in autumn. Its upright, elegantly branched habit slowly builds into a small tree of around 4m.
Happy in sun or dappled shade with shelter from cold winds, it makes a superb specimen for a lawn, border or large container.
